Aerodynamic Solar Camper
The distances in Australia are long and charging infrastructure is still in the early stages of widespread roll out. To successfully complete the "big lap" requires maximising the range that the EV can travel by minimising the drag created by the camper in tow.
The camper being used for the journey is an
aerodynamically enhanced New Age Wayfinder 12F Adventurer with the following features to smooth airflow:
-
Wedge boot
-
Forward and rear roof extension
-
Undertray & stone stomper
The Wayfinder camper has undergone full electrification with the following features:
-
Maximised area for 2kW solar panels
-
Upgraded to high capacity, low weight onboard battery for both camper power & backup EV charge
-
All gas appliance converted to electric (induction cooktop, hot water system, BBQ point to power point)
-
Upgrading inefficient appliances to energy efficient electric alternatives:
-
Three way fridge -> compressor fridge
-
LED lighting
-
Space heater -> electric blankets
-
-
Having everything electrical means we can take power from the car if ever needed to run the van.

Considerations for camper selection:

-
Height: ideally below height of tow vehicle to minimise drag
-
Liveability: enjoyable for a family of four to travel in for an extended period of time
-
Practicality: ease of set up / pack up (Jacka Electric Roof Lift System)
-
Weight: within limits of EV tow capacity & limit effect on range reduction
-
Off Road: to travel to iconic places in Australia
